Azali Azlan breaks SPM record with 20 1As and 1 2A
So, SPM results were released yesterday. Lots of tears of joy and despair. Lots of cries of happiness and pain.
But I’m sure Azali Azlan was screaming with joy. Why shouldn’t he. He attained 20 1As and 1 2A, thus breaking the record of previous year’s Nur Amalina Che Bakri (17 1As). What’s next Azali? Are you going to write a motivational book too? Will you be endorsing NST and Astro as well? Anyway, what ever happened to Amalina? Anybody knows?
Here’s something interesting. He said in an interview that his sister is one of his inspirations. He said his sister is currently studying medicine in University College Cork in Ireland. What’s so interesting about that? Well, the way he said it, it sounds like “University of Cock“. Hahaha. Scroll down and listen to it yourself ;)
I don’t know what Cork means to them but I do know what it means in Bahasa Malaysia. It’s gabus.
So, University College Cork = Kolej Universiti Gabus. Can you imagine getting a scroll saying Nadlique Abdullah, graduan Kolej Universiti Gabus tahun 2009. Hehe.
There’s another one. Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia.
Flinders = serpihan-serpihan kecil.
Flinders University = Universiti Serpihan-serpihan Kecil.
Now, back to the story :)
My goodness, 21 As???? You have got to be joking me. Haha. whatever it is, congratulations to him. You did a bloody good job mate. You’re one of a kind.
He plans to further his studies in the field of biotechnology and becomes a professor eventually.
In Kelantan, what the father of another SPM high achiever said was also interesting.
“…anak saya berjaya dengan bantuan guru-guru dan bantuan kerajaan pusat…”
Sempat lagi berkempen untuk BN. Haha.

I smell jealousy here… full of shit huh…
whutever…
Lerrr, org saja nak berlawak dia kata jealous? Takde nak jealous la cik abang/cik kak oi.
What he did was marvelous. Something that should be exemplified by more Malaysian.
So, jealousy? Nope. Recognition and respect? Most definitely yes.
Somehow, I sensed that I might be receiving a lot of flak because of this entry. Hmm…
Just to clarify things out, I’m not undermining anybody mentioned in the article. I have nothing but utmost respect to Azali Azlan and Amalina Che Bakri.
In this entry, I’m just trying to share the news in a light-hearted kind of way.
Apologies in advance to those who are offended :)
P.S. There’s really nothing wrong with pronouncing cork as cock. By cock, I mean ayam jantan. Don’t get any ideas there folks ;)
congrats to them too.. seriously, I never heard of 21 subjects during my time! kids nowadays are super-kids!
anyway, how DO you pronounce cork? to me, it sure sound the same?! :-)
congrats to them too.. I never of 21 subjects during my time.. kids these days are super-kids.. btw, how DO you pronounce cork.. they sound similar to me :-)
Indeed, many congratulations to him. Gosh, how I wish I had his brains :P
Actually, yeah, cork and cock do sound similar. Perhaps, accentuate on the letter ‘R’ a little?? Hehe.
wat? Universiti Kolej Gabus?hello..in order to get into that uni we had to work our asses off!!sorry, but as one of its students i feel a bit offended…
Geez people. Chill out already. I’m not commenting on the quality of your school at all. I’m sure it is an excellent school. There’s no doubt about that.
There are funny school names all over the world. It doesn’t mean that your school is bad.
We’ve got a number of schools around here as well and we make fun of each other all the time. It’s called friendly rivalry.
What’s next? People from University of Bath is going to get offended when I translate the name to Universiti Mandi?
Geez…
Saya saja nak bergurau je cik kak oi. Kalau tersinggung, maaf lah ye, maaf zahir batin.
Actually. 17As and 21As are in no way a fair gauge for intellectual ability. I just ranted about it actually. I find it ridiculous that everyone is treating them like some kind of prodigies.
Clearly, from the comments on your post, not many people would agree with me.
And that JEALOUSY accusation is utter rubbish. Please. It is baseless and completely simplistic, and just a paraphrase of “I think you suck, I don’t know why, I’m too dumb to argue my way through, so I shall just call you jealous! HA! WHUTever!”
“I smell jealousy here… full of shit huh…
whutever…”
But from his clearly logic and salient argument I can understand why he would spout stuff like that.
“hello..in order to get into that uni we had to work our asses off!!sorry, but as one of its students i feel a bit offended…”
That doesn’t mean the uni is good. It just means YOU are…
Okay to be fair. It could very well be either. Shrugs.
Well said chewinggum.
I agree with you that succeeding in academics alone is not a good indicator of one’s intellectual ability.
In fact, to measure one’s intellectual ability is rather subjective. For example, there are many businessmen and entrepreneurs out there who couldn’t even manage to go through high school and yet, they were creative and business smart. Intelligent in their own right.
Academicians might be geniuses in their own fields but might not know a thing about entreprenurism, and etc. This is just an example.
There’s a businessman here in Australia who you can consider “dumb as a mule” and yet managed to be amongst the richest. Rich as in, really rich.
Also, to comment on “work our asses off” argument, well, if one’s a sponsored student (say, government-sponsored), you did have to work your ass off to get the SCHOLARSHIP, but not the school you went to. I have friends who are intelligent enough to land themselves with scholarships but got sent to horrible schools instead. Again, allow me to say that not all schools that the governments/corporations send their students to are bad. Many are great schools.
Anyway, fair to say that measuring intellectual ability depends on other factors as well.
Malaysia (and the rest of the world perhaps) has become so exam-oriented that if you don’t succeed academically, then you’re not intelligent.
On the “jealousy” comment, that person needs to justify his/her accusations with some valid arguments. I really don’t have a reason to be jealous with either one of them. I am doing fine in my own right and I’m happy with the path I’m taking. Plus, I’m not really interested in becoming a biotech-nician, or a medical practitioner.
