Keputusan Pilihan Raya Umum ke-12 Malaysia: I woke up to a new Malaysia

Malaysians went to the polls yesterday and today, I woke up to a new Malaysia.

Indeed, the people have spoken.

Barisan Nasional has failed to gain the two third majority that they wanted. They did obtain a simple majority from the people, but not the two third majority. Looks like the tide has turned.

I was wrong in my initial prediction that BN will make a clean sweep in Semenanjung Malaysia. Well, I should have figured. 90% of the blogs that I read in the blogosphere all points to support of the opposition party.

The opposition retained Kelantan and gained control in the following states:

1. Pulau Pinang
2. Kedah
3. Perak
4. Selangor

A few of the most notable victories were:

1. Nurul Izzah Anwar (PKR) victorious over Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil (UMNO)
2. Nga Kor ming (DAP) victorious over M. Kayveas (PPP)
3. Dr. D. Jeyakumar (PKR) victorious over Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu (MIC)
4. Datuk Seri Dr. Koh Tsu Koon loses his seat
5. Datuk Zainuddin Maidin loses his seat

Finally, the opposition has some formidable presence in the parliament. In a way, I am happy. As I’ve said before, to have a great democratic country is to have a strong government as well as a strong opposition.

By the way, I was absolutely impressed by the “unity” showed by the Kelantan people during the solat hajat to pray for the win of PAS in their state.

For the sake of the people, I do hope the new state governments will do their jobs well. It’ll be interesting to see how they go about doing that.

Pak Lah, let this be a message to you and your government to work much much harder.

Congratulations to PAS, PKR, DAP, and as well as BN.

Now, let’s move on 🙂
