I want to be a pilot, thus the reason why I want to stay in Australia.

One of the deciding factors of whether I’ll be returning to Malaysia or staying in Australia is this. Which will give me a much better chance in pursuing my lifelong dream of becoming a pilot. This entry is with the assumption that I can’t get into any cadet pilot programs.

Here’s the situation. In Malaysia, it’ll cost me around RM250,000 for a 2-year-plus CPL + ATPL program. In Australia, it’ll cost me around AUD80,000 for the same program, plus the Flying Instructors’ course.

Imagine if I save a couple of thousand per month (if I’m lucky) in either countries and in their respective currencies, how long will it take? Earning AUD4,000 and save till AUD80,000 seems to be much closer than earning RM4,000 (again if I’m lucky) and saving for RM250,000.

If there’s a way for me to do my flying licence in Malaysia within the next couple of years, then I’ll gladly return to Malaysia, that’s for sure. However, I’m still figuring out that “one” way.

I’m still aiming for the cadet pilot programs though… God I hope I’ll get accepted into one. I don’t think anybody else is more obsessed (in a good way of course) about this than myself.

Why are you doing STPM? A Levels? Foundation Studies? Diploma? International Baccaulerate (IB)? Ausmat? SAM? Which one is better?

For Malaysians, there are so many options after high school. Talking about tertiary education, there are so many pathways out there. Some of them are:

1. Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM)
2. A Levels
3. Pre-U Foundation Studies
4. Diploma
5. International Baccalaureate (IB)
6. Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT)
7. South Australian Matriculation (SAM)

The question is, which one is better? Better in terms of quality (i.e. which one prepares you better) as well as which one opens up more opportunities later on.

Before university, I did my foundation studies in a Malaysian college. After that, I applied into a university in Australia and got accepted into its dual degree in Bachelor of Laws & Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) program.

However, if I was better informed back then, perhaps I would’ve done things differently. At the moment, I actually see merits in A Levels and Diploma. It seems like with these two, your options of what to do later on is much wider. Correct me if I’m wrong though.

Anyway, what do you guys think? Which one is better in your eyes?

Ma Pa, I want to be a pilot (Making a Career Choice)

(This is a rather emotional post.If you don’t like to read emotional posts, the ‘X’ button is at the top right hand corner of your screen.)

“Once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards for there you have been and there you will long to return” – Leonardo Da Vinci –

I’ve always thought that I knew what I was going to do with my life (career-wise I mean). Back when I was 15, I was pretty sure that I was going to be a doctor. Well, that lasted for a couple of months. Plus, during the final two years of high school, my performance in those critical science subjects were not so good, so, I thought, doctor? Hell no.. Not to mention the fact that I didn’t really like the lifestyle of a med student and also the lifestyle of a doctor itself. No offense to doctors out there! It’s just not my thing.

Since I was small, there’s only one career pathway that I have ever considered to be on. I wanted to be in uniforms and I wanted to be in the skies. That’s what I wanted to do.

Fred Hollows Foundation: Curing Blindness from just AUD25

One of the cruellest things that could happen to a person is loss of sight.

Fred Hollows Foundation exists in order to give people from impoverished countries a chance to see again.

By giving just AUD25, you’ll be able to restore the sight of a person suffering from cataract. Giving AUD80 on the other hand will assist in purchasing 10 intraocular lenses.

Fred Hollows Foundation is an organisation that I have been supporting. I urge you to do the same. Go to here.

Sponsoring a Child: Will it make any difference (PLAN Australia)?

There’s one charity organisation that I like here in Australia. The name of the organisation is PLAN Australia.

PLAN Australia exists to combat poverty around the world. One thing that I like about PLAN Australia is that they don’t discriminate people based on their religion or political beliefs.

One of the programs that they have is the child sponsorship program. With just around AUD43 per month, you will be funding the well being of a child and his/her community.

What do you guys reckon? Can sponsoring a child really make a difference?

Is studying overseas and at the same time spending so much money worth it?

It is an understood perception in the Malaysian society that studying overseas is something “very important” in securing a bright and high-paying future, career wise.

How far is this true?

Here are some of my observations from my time in Australia.

It’s my fifth year of being here now. I started with a dual degree of Law (Gosh, how I miss telling people that I’m doing Law. Hehe.) and Commerce (Accounting). I’ve since dropped law and focusing on accounting alone. Planning to get back to Law later on though. Maybe part-time, after I’ve settled down and everything.

Anyway, back to my observations 😛

Maklumat tentang Askar Wataniah. Information about the Malaysia’s Territorial Army.

One thing I noticed is that it is so hard to get any information whatsoever about Malaysia’s Askar Wataniah from the web. There’s nothing much on the Ministry of Defence’s website as well.

Recently, I asked somebody who is already in the Askar Wataniah to provide me with some information about the organisation. If I’m not mistaken, she’s a Sergeant in the Askar Wataniah and according to her, she has recruited quite a few youths to join the organisation.

I’ve decided to publish the information that I received below so that it may be of use to others out there who are interested.
