What would you do if you receive $1 million dollar tomorrow?

I read an article about what you should do when you win the lottery. It was written by a well-known financial planner based here in Brisbane.

Now, setting aside the lottery part, just imagine ourselves in that position. What would you do if you were to receive $1 million dollar tomorrow?

If it was me, perhaps I would:

– Leave the money in FD-like accounts until I graduate.
– After graduation, I’d take out some to pay for my CPL/IR and Flight Instructor Rating Course.
– At the same time, acquire some investment properties and also set up a share portfolio.

It sure is nice to daydream huh? ๐Ÿ˜€

Blogging Your Way to Financial Freedom

Blogging your way to financial freedom. Is it really possible? Personally, I’m rather sceptical. Unless you’re giving full-time attention to it and have a vast network of blogs and websites, then it’s hard I reckon. It’s possible, but it’s hard.

Being a blogger is just another job. You can create some side income with it like what Kenny Sia and a few others have done but I doubt that one can classify that as a passive income. It’s not really an investment-like venture. The reason is that if one neglects his blog, not much money can be made. Also, a lot of efforts need to be put to market your blog. Blogging professionally is more business-like I think.

Blogging as a Business? What’s a blog anyway?

Blogging is one of the things that I actually enjoy doing. It has been an interesting journey so far. Apart from sharing ideas and thoughts, I also hope to earn some side income from my blog to keep me going. I treat my blog as a business.

Anyway, what’s a blog?

A blog, or a weblog is a website maintained by a person called the blogger. He/she posts interesting materials, his/her journal entries, pictures, videos, and more. Visitors are also usually able to leave comments and share their thoughts on the blog. I guess I can say that a blog is a more humanised version of a website. You are able to interact with people on a blog.

How to blog?

A blogger uses a blogging platform to maintain his/her blog. He uploads posts, materials, pictures, videos, musics and loads more through the blogging platform.

Blogging Platforms available out there?

There are many out there but I think the two common ones are WordPress and Blogger (Blogspot).

A wordpress blog’s URL is usually in the format of NAME.wordpress.com while a blogspot’s blog is in the form of NAME.blogspot.com.

Sometimes, people use either one of this blogging platforms and couple them with their own domain names. That”s when you are able to get something like www.nadlique.com to go with your blog. Unfortunately, this costs money. You’ll be spending on domain names as well as web hosting.

A really good book that I’d recommend is Start Your Own Blogging Business by Entrepreneur Press and J.S. McDougall . This is the book that got me going the first time around.

In the future, we’ll look at things like how to profit from your blog and how to market your blog.

How to accumulate capital for business or investments

Everybody knows that to start a business or to start investing, you need capital (in Bahasa Melayu, modal). This issue of finding capital to start with is also one of the reasons why many people do not invest nor save nor start a business.

Do these excuses apply to you:

1. “I have no savings at all to buy unit trusts”
2. “What’s left over from my salary at the end of the month is so meagre that I shouldn’t be bothering about investing.”
3. “Invest? Business? Are you kidding me? I barely have enough money to keep myself going.”

To start, let’s make it clear. There will never be enough money to invest or even form a business. However, we, humans, the breadwinner, have the power. We are the decision-makers. The issue of “not having enough money” is only in our minds.

The solution is simple. Make sure there’s enough money to plow into investments/businesses. How? Use the thing that sits between the tight few inches between our ears, my dad says. In other words, use our brain. Be creative.

If you are working and rely on your salary, try working out your budget. Try cutting down things that are unnecessary. Make sure your inflows are much more than your outflows. Don’t even be tempted to load up your credit cards. Bad debts are bad. Money will be enough if you make it enough. Cut down on those luxuries. Hey, who said journey of wealth creation is easy?

If it’s still not enough, then it’s time to get creative!

Brisbane Sunday Market: 10.05.2009

It has been an interesting day last Sunday trading at the Brisbane Market, Rocklea.

I have been selling there on Sundays for over 2 years now with a friend of mine.

I reckon we did quite okay on that day. Met some colourful characters in the form of customers. There’s this one kid who bought three battery packs from me for AUD6. He handed AUD6.50 to me and told me to keep the change. That was interesting. It’s the first time ever for me to encounter a person who voluntarily hands over loose change and say “keep the change mate!”. Well, lucky me I guess ๐Ÿ™‚

What’s deterring me from staying in Australia

Previously, I wrote about the reasons that could potentially lead me to stay in Australia.

Now, I’ll list out some reasons that might bring me home to Malaysia.

1. I predict that it’ll be hard for me to get a job

The economy is pretty bad here. Many companies are laying off their workers. On top of that, I am pretty academically challenged (i.e. my academic results are not that great). So, I predict that it’ll be hard for me to get a job here. Also, to get a permanent good-paying job in Australia, you need the Permanent Residency status. To apply for PR, you have to spend a few thousand dollars. If I won’t be able to secure myself a job, spending a few thousand dollars would be a waste of resources, no?

Where do I stand now? Financially speaking of course.

I’ve been blogging about financial freedom for nearly 2 years now. I’ve started my journey towards financial freedom for even longer than that. So, where do I stand now, financially speaking?

Trading

I’ve been trading stocks and CFDs for nearly 4 years. I’ve been able to stay profitable for all these years, and hopefully for a very long time.

I’ve reduced my trading stake due to the lack of certainty we’re having right now. I’ve already reinvested quite a significant proportion of my profits into a new business venture.

So far, for the past few months, my trading account has been advancing, but very very slowly. Snail pace.

Sunday Market: Your Items are faulty, I want my money back!

In the business of product selling, from time to time, you’ll face clients who’d like to do exchanges or even refunds due to the items bought being faulty. I don’t have a problem with that. In fact, the law demands it. What I have problems with is that some of them are just flat out lying.

Here are a couple of examples.
