How to Solve WordPress 2.6 Problems (404 Error Message)

WordPress 2.6 was recently released. This morning, after backing up my blog contents, I decided to upgrade my WordPress 2.5.1 to WordPress 2.6.

After a successful attempt at upgrading, I tried clicking on links and posts on my blog. Crap… Problems… The main page of my website was alright but upon clicking posts and etc., the 404 Error Message came up.

What have I done??????

I tried disabling and enabling the plugins, tried doing this and that, but nothing seems to work.

Tried to scout for answers on WordPress forums, but unfortunately, everything sounds like garbage to me.

Tried to find a way to revert back to WordPress 2.5.1 but couldn’t figure out how to do it.

After over an hour and neck-level frustration, I tried to google for more answer.

Somebody said, “this sounds like a permalink issue”.

So, in my case, the problem was solved by:

1. In your WordPress Dashboard, go to SETTINGS.
3. Change the COMMON SETTINGS back to DEFAULT.
4. Now try navigating around your website.
5. If problem has been solved, you may now change the COMMON SETTINGS to anything you like.

If the problem is still unsolved, sorry, I can’t help you!

Peace folks!

  1. That’s why till date i do not dare to update mine to the latest version. I guess I will just leave it to my current 2.5.1 version. By the way, are there any difference between these two that worth all your effort?

  2. Same here…sometimes, it’s tempting to get the latest version, but it’s not uncommon to hear compatibility issues, especially with so many plugins involved.

As long as there’s no major security patches, I am sticking to the old version.

    Thanks for sharing the experience!

  3. True folks, I always get the butterflies in my tummy whenever I want to upgrade.

As far as I can see, there’s not much difference between 2.6 and the old one.

  4. And there is what some alternative? 😉
